Sefro is a charming little community in the heart of the Marche region, nestling in the beauty of its mountains and lush countryside fed by the river Scarsito which is rich with trout.

The trout are so plentiful that even a statue has been erected to them by a tributary stream between Sefro and the hamlet of Sorti approximately 3 kms away.

The Scarsito river is crystal clear and pure as it cascades over several small waterfalls on its way through the village and on down the valley. A delight for photographers and fishermen alike!

The area is rich in history and holds many secrets and trails ready to explore. There is the Franciscan trail which ultimately links two shrines – Loreto and Assisi. One of St Francis’s first companions Bernardo Quintavalle who was a nobleman of Assisi turned hermit and friar spent two years living in caves above Sefro helped by a woodsman. The caves can be visited along a short trail and apart from the hermit’s grotto, there are several other areas of interest to speliologists.

The area is rich with paths that can be explored on foot hiking, mountain biking and even horse riding. The trails need no aids but there are rock faces for those wishing to climb.  Whether your interest be botany or ornithology or just enjoying the countryside – this is the place for you.
